According to APRE President Scott Hanley, “our registration for the PREC on April 3rd and 4th looks to be on track for great attendance for another successful in-person conference. But we’ve also been hearing from a number of longstanding attendees that travel is not possible this year.”

The Association of Public Radio Engineers is now accepting proposals for presentations for the Public Radio Engineering Conference (PREC) to be held April 3rd and 4th, 2025 with both in-person and virtual attendance options.
PREC is an educational conference. We are looking for technical presentations that are neither marketing, nor promoting a specific product, company, or service. The attendees are highly technical and attend the conference to find innovative ideas, solutions to problems, and educational enrichment to carry back to their stations. Our goal is to offer a variety of presentations based upon peer knowledge & experiences, manufacturer solutions, and educational papers that will benefit the public radio broadcast engineering community.
TOPICS: Including but not limited to - Emerging technology & techniques; RF theory and innovations of antennas & transmitters; audio production techniques and solutions; operations including automation and traffic systems; STLs and studio links; console technology; SNMP; budget planning; legal issues & compliance and advocacy; virtualization; facility upgrades; remote studio operation & production; digital services including video, streaming, podcasting, news coverage, and more. Presentations from members about major projects and project planning are also welcome.
DETAILS: Session slots are typically 30-45 minutes with an additional 10 minute Q&A period at the end of the presentation.

PREC 2025 is an IN-PERSON event with an option for virtual attendance. PREC’s virtual option has been well attended and we received lots of positive feedback from attendees. In person is better, but our virtual option is a close second!

Engineering Achievement award for 2024
This honor is awarded for “outstanding contributions” to the art and/or science of radio engineering that has made a “significant impact on, or improvement in” the state of the public radio industry.
The 2024 Engineering Awards Dinner was held Friday April 12 at 7pm. The recipient of the 2024 Engineering Award is Michael Beach, Vice President of Distribution at NPR. Mike’s ongoing contributions to all of public radio have been remarkable over ten years of dramatic change.
APRE is also delighted to recognize two foundational members of the organization with the Meritorious Service Award – Jobie Sprinkle of WFAE, Charlotte and Paxton Durham of WVTF, Roanoke (Ret). Active engineering professionals and former APRE board members, there are no two people more invaluable to the continued success of the PREC in their service to the Association of Public Radio Engineers.
